ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
60% Protection of Life and Property
- Enforce state laws and city ordinances.
- Patrol the community routinely and conduct traffic enforcement to ensure a safe and secure community.
- Engage in citizen contact situations such as business checks, assisting stranded motorists, suspicious person contacts, crime prevention sharing with civic organizations or homeowners, and any action in furtherance of the community policing philosophy of the department.
- Provide basic response to crime scenes including identification, preservation, and collection of evidence.
- Provide advanced processing of non-critical crime scene as assigned by the on-duty Watch Commander. (Police Officer 2 & 3)
- Conduct thorough criminal and traffic investigations.
- Apprehend violators in a reasonable and lawful manner following established laws, policies and regulations. Transport detainees to appropriate facilities.
- Assist citizens with situations that involve crime, traffic concerns, quality of life issues or any situation that requires a police response.
- Answer citizen complaints, investigate suspicious conditions, and take necessary action, including preparing necessary police reports.
- Alert citizens of hazardous and dangerous conditions. Direct traffic when needed.
- Operate motor vehicle on a regular basis.
- Carry and maintain qualification for authorized firearms and other weapons pursuant to department standard operating procedures.
30% Administrative Duties
- Conduct crime prevention surveys and other activities.
- Complete all necessary official forms and reports.
- Prepare cases for successful prosecution and provide credible courtroom testimony.
- Maintain cleanliness, organization, and readiness of assigned work area and equipment (booking desk, gun cleaning station, report writing, locker room, etc.). (Police Officer 2)
- Ensure active participation in and reporting on an assigned open beat project by officers assigned to his or her shift. (Police Officer 2)
- Ensure successful planning and execution of shift-related special enforcement activities (i.e. traffic) at the discretion of the on-duty Watch Commander. (Police Officer 2 & 3)
- Conduct and present analysis of crime trends and statistics to assigned beat team. (Police Officer 2 & 3)
10% Training Participation
- Attend training and seminars to maintain proficiency and certifications.
- Actively participate in training and drill sessions, tests, and evaluations.
- Act as a liaison with homeowners’ associations and neighborhood watch programs, attending meetings and events as requested. (Police Officer 2)
- Plan and present law enforcement/public safety-related training classes in areas of expertise. (Police Officer 2 & 3)
Continually looks for new and improved ways of completing the above functions. Other tasks as assigned will be performed in order to address business needs.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Latitude: Most duties are assigned and then the employee arranges tasks in order to complete duties. Problem-solving and decision-making involving the protection of life and property is accomplished independently most of the time. Regular and reliable attendance at work is required.
Interaction: Frequent interaction with employees throughout the organization, prosecutors, and the general public. Occasional interaction with outside agencies including municipal, county, state, and federal agencies.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
- Some college, preferred.
- Must have satisfied all requirements as set forth in K.S.A. 74-5605 “Qualifications of Applicant (Police Officer) for Training Course Requirements.”
- Must complete 40 hours of continuing education training annually, as required.
- One year of law enforcement experience, preferred.
- Valid Kansas driver’s license and driving record must meet commercial liability insurance requirements.
