Job Description
Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Accountant to join The Independent School. As the Accountant, under limited direction you will be responsible for overseeing financial aspects related to budget planning and analysis, reconciliations, and postings, to prepare and assist in the preparation of financial statements and reports, preform audits of records and expenditures for compliance with GAAP, Federal, and State laws and regulations, provide financial analysis of all business functions and develop effective dashboards for monitoring overall performance. The accountant reports to the Chief Budgeting Officer.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Reconciles school cash, bank statements, and general ledger accounts.
- Prepares the preparation of payroll, receivable, and payable reports and analysis as needed.
- Supports the month-end close process including monthly journal entries.
- Prepares the compiling and filing of various reports with other government agencies.
- Understands and carries out oral and written directions.
- Establishes and maintains cooperative working relations with those contacted in the course of work.
- Develops and conducts in-service training to provide technical assistance and guidance to departments and school site personnel on budgets, accounting, and related business office software programs.
- Prepares narratives, reports findings and makes recommendations; and develops and updates operating and instruction manuals for the business office.
- To oversee all school collections of outstanding accounts receivable.
- Prepare work papers for independent auditors and perform internal control audits.
- Accountability for fixed asset identification, classification and reporting.
- Analyzes operations to identify areas in need of reorganization, downsizing, or elimination.
- To perform other duties as assigned by the head of the school.
- To support the school and its leadership.

Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required.
- Three to five years of experience in accounting is required.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
- Must be able to access various departments of the five school locations.
