Description

Surgical technologists are allied health professionals who are specifically trained to function as an integral member of the surgical team, performing specialized duties before, during and after a surgical procedure.  Surgical technologists prepare the operating room, including the sterile field, setting up surgical equipment, supplies and solutions. During surgery, surgical technologists pass instruments, fluids and supplies to the surgeon and prepare and manage surgical equipment. Surgical technologists simultaneously manage the sterile field and specimens. They perform a count of sponges and supplies to prevent foreign retained objects. Surgical technologists are certified following successful completion of a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs-accredited program or other programmatically-accredited surgical technology program and the national Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) examination administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.

The Surgical Technology Program is offered in an online lecture format with an on campus lab component and locally available clinical affiliate sites. Students sit for their national certification exam immediately following graduation. CST (Certified Surgical Technologist) (CAAHEP Accredited program)
