Medication Aide. 512603

Description

Course Description: Certified medication aides will be taught basic medication administration techniques and safety. The course is intended to prepare the individual to safely perform duties which are of a standard nature within Kansas licensed adult care homes. Once certified, the individual then gains competency as these basic skills are practiced under the supervision of a Kansas-licensed nurse. There is not a scope of practice for unlicensed, assistive personnel. The credential that is conferred upon them is an acknowledgment of having successfully completed a body of training including didactic and clinical experience. The practice of the medication aide is the responsibility of the supervising licensed nurse. The ultimate goal is to provide competent care to the frail and elderly residents of the state’s adult care homes (Quoted from KDHE, 2011).

Length: The entire course will lasts 2-7 weeks for a minimum of 75 hours and is offered on various days/times.  As required by KDADS, at least 25 contact-hours will be completed in the lab or offsite at an appropriate clinical setting and 50 hours will be completed onsite in the classroom.  The clinical hours will be completed during the same hours as the lecture/didactic.

Admissions Procedure: Application forms must be completed in person at the Delores Homes Training Center or online and supported by proof of identification.  In accordance with the KDADS requirements, students must be 18 years old to take the course.  Students must submit proof of an active CNA license that was previously issued.  All CMA students must also receive a score of 4 or higher on the Work-Keys Reading for Information exam.  Students must also provide documentation of a signed medical waiver of responsibility, proof of influenza vaccine if in season, and TB screening or chest x-ray before working in the clinical setting.
