Description
This course syllabus is designed to provide the student the information and guidelines necessary to internalize critical thinking theory with implementation as critical action in clinical practices. All theory and clinical learning objectives, methods to facilitate the learning, and how the learning will be measured are included. This format encourages the student to become active in learning experience and presents a variety of methods for achieving program success.
Course Name: Certified Nursing Assistant Training Program
Course Description: This is a 6 week, Certified Nursing Assistant Training Program which is in conformance with Kansas Department of Health and Senior Services as well as the Kansas Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development. This program provides entry level training that prepares students to care for residents in need of continuous care. This care includes Activities of daily living such as feeding, bathing, dressing, and toileting. This course will also educate on infection prevention techniques, proper body mechanics, residents rights, abuse and neglect, care of dementia and Alzheimer patients.
This course provides 90 hours of training to prepare candidates for the state nurse assistant exam. Students who complete this course with satisfactory progress will receive a certificate of completion which affords them the ability to sit for the state exam. With successful completion of the state exam, candidates will hold a certificate as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
CNA’s can obtain employment in the following areas: nursing homes, home health agencies, assisted living facilities, adult daycares, hospitals, and rehab facilities.

⮚ Uphold the honest and high principles of the profession and accept its disciplines. ⮚ Develop attitudes consistent with those expected of an individual working in the healthcare industry and in society in general.
⮚ Demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and professionalism required by employers and patients.
⮚ Identify common clinical procedures performed in the Long Term Care setting. ⮚ Demonstrates knowledge in caring for vulnerable populations.
⮚ Apply for and pass the state Certification Exam.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:

➢ Taking and recording vital signs
➢ Measuring and recording height and weight

➢ Recognizing abnormal changes in body functioning and the importance of reporting such changes to a supervisor
➢ Caring for residents when death is imminent
➢ Personal care skills including; Bathing; Grooming, including mouth care;Dressing, Toileting,Assisting with eating and hydration,Proper feeding techniques,Skin care, Transfers, positioning, and turning
➢ Mental health and social service needs
➢ Modifying nursing assistant’s behavior in response to resident’s behavior ➢ Awareness of developmental tasks associated with the aging process
➢ How to respond to resident behavior
➢ Allowing the residents to make personal choices, providing and reinforcing other behavior consistent with the resident’s dignity
➢ Utilizing the resident’s family as a source of emotional support
➢ Care of cognitively impaired residents
➢ Techniques for addressing the unique needs and behaviors of individuals with dementia (Alzheimer’s and others)
➢ Communicating with cognitively impaired residents
➢ Understanding the behavior of cognitively impaired residents
➢ Appropriate responses to the behavior of cognitively impaired residents ➢ Methods of reducing the effects of cognitive impairments
➢ Basic restorative services
➢ Training the resident in self-care according to the resident’s abilities ➢ The use of assistive devices in transferring, ambulation, eating, and dressing ➢ Maintenance of range of motion
➢ Proper turning and positioning in bed and chair
➢ Bowel and bladder training
➢ Care and use of prosthetic and orthotic devices; K. Residents’ rights ➢ Providing privacy and maintenance of confidentiality
➢ Promoting the residents’ right to make personal choices to accommodate their needs ➢ Giving assistance in resolving grievances and disputes
➢ Providing needed assistance in getting to and participating in resident and family groups and other activities
➢ Maintaining care and security of residents’ personal possessions
➢ Promoting the residents’ right to be free from abuse, mistreatment, and neglect and the need to report any instances of such treatment to appropriate facility staff; ➢ Avoiding the need for restraints in accordance with current professional standards
Units: Theory hours are 45 hours and Clinical hours are 45, totaling 90 clock hours.
Prerequisites: Be 16 years of age,
Covid vaccine or exemption, Negative Tb test, Negative drug screen, background screen, Pass Family safety registry background
Student Outcomes: Students will be able to pass the theory and clinical portion of the course, graduate, and be to sit for the Kansas State Certified Nurse Assistant Exam.
Program Hours:
First Academic Week: Monday – Friday 8am-2:30pm ( Lecture)
Remaining Weeks:
Monday and Tuesday 8am- 1:30pm (lecture)
Wednesday and Thursdays 7:00 am- 5:00pm (Clinical)
Lunch Breaks 12-12:30pm

In the event that a student wishes to cancel their enrollment, following the signed enrollment agreement; they must do so within 3 business days of the signed enrollment agreement. Upon cancellation, if any monies towards tuition have been paid, the student will be fully refunded within 10 business days in the form of a check.
